Plants make their own food from light.

Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air and water from the roots. Chlorophyll uses sunlight to turn them into glucose, the plant’s food, and gives off oxygen.

carbon dioxide + water becomes, with light, glucose + oxygen

Test yourself

  1. Which gas do leaves take in from the air?
  2. What job does chlorophyll do?
  3. Why does a plant kept in the dark stop growing?
